Okay, so possibly a week ago, when flicking through channels, I stumbled upon a song, that sounded very familiar, only to be sung by amateaur, or what I'd like to call a 'wannabee'!
So, I hope you are all acquainted with Jason Derulo and his first hit 'Whatcha say', because this is the main subject. This single came out at the very end of 2009, and to be honest with myself, it isn't the best song I have heard.
But then say, three quick months later, a nobody called Reese comes along and does the same song, with the same introduction, instead he raps with different lyrics.
I don't know why, but this really outraged me. Jason Derulo's second song has only really come out, and here is this 'wannabee' stealing a song and making it his own.
Okay, so many artists have done this... remaking a song that has been out there before, and with some of them I am extremely not happy.
But what I think is... quote from Tyra on ANTM... 'If your going to copy somebody, make sure you own it!'. And this boy Reece has definitely not OWNED it in my opinion.
I think it's quite pathetic. If I was a new solo artist, breaking into the scene, I'd show my talent with a song of my own, a song people can remember ME for. I think the consequences are that people will only know Reece's song as a copy of Jason Derulo's, no one will ever identify that song without thinking of a totally different person. Will they or will they not?
I also think this is copyright from poor Jason Derulo, who too is new on the scene. It was his first ever song... well for British viewers and I think in a way Reece has taken the limelight with this song, even though personally it is not that good, and I don't think many will favour it over Jason's version anyway.
- Jason Derulo's Version is set in a vast corridor, and on an outside stair way. He presents it with good acting skills, and it is a typical American video, with a well thought out scene and layout. Derulo dances as well as sings and acts, why not call it a musical? His name is also screened on the TV. A skilled producer and director is obviously at hand. And the song has a understanding story behind it, represented by the characters included in some of the scenes. Yes, in Derulo's version, there is more than one scene.
- Reece's Version set outside, with three big 4x4 cars, that have personalised plates. Something else to tick me off, at the start, the introduction he stole says Jason Derulo's name. Reece calls it a remix, which I am happy with, but dang, Jason hasn't even warmed up yet, and someone goes and steals his song. Not much movement, just a few swaggs, and swipes of the arm...wheres the fly? No other scene I'm presuming. Some good lyrics, but I see not other characters representing the story. Or maybe he's talking about the dominant cars. Seems like this guys doing a commercial for Nike shoes. He attempts the 'watcha say' repetitive bit, but I'm getting bored, and a little annoyed. Okay, if you need anymore evidence, the links below.
I've critiqued many British music videos, because they cannot actually compare with any of the American ones. Americans have other characters for their video, they actually have a sort of short movie to go with the song. Whereas, the British tend to just have the group or solo act in one scene, giving a few moves, and swiping at the camera. (N-dubz!).
There is an exception though, I am not all that negative. But the up rise of JLS is going excellent. Their song: 'Every body in Love' is a lot more similar to a video the Americans would've created, and I am very proud of them. (Alexandra Burke...Who is she?).
As well as Jay Sean, I hope everybody has heard of that guy, he is brilliant! He did a K.O. on America!
Please don't get me wrong, I am not slaughtering Britain, and neither am I slaughtering any other country. Just the two people I'm comparing happen to be in different countries where sometimes they can produce better music videos.
What are your thoughts on the versions of 'Whatcha say'?
Do you think I'm being tough? Do you think that it's just the natural cycle of Music artists?
What do you think of this whole situation? because I'd love to know what you think about it.
Whether you agree, disagree, or suggest another opinion.
J'aimeJ'adore darlings.
